Twice a widower, a genius landscape painter, author of the most famous candy wrapper. Ivan Shishkin

The work of Ivan Shishkin is compared with the music of Tchaikovsky. Clear and powerful paintings radiate positive energy. His canvases flood in serene light. The artist gives the viewer joy. But few people know what trials fell on his lot. Shishkin wrote the sun even in the darkest moments of his life.

Family matters
Ivan Shishkin was born in 1832 in a merchant family. Their dynasty owned the first industrial enterprise in the city of Elabuga. The plant was engaged in casting bells. His father Ivan Vasilievich traded in grain. Old-timers said that the older Shishkin was an honest and incorruptible person. He was elected several times by the city headman. There were six children in the family of the merchant, but only the son of Vanya was artistically gifted. And this boy glorified the Shishkin family all over the world.

It was important for the father to give the children a good education. The younger Ivan was sent to study in a gymnasium in Kazan. At age 16, the young man came to his father’s house for the holidays and said that he did not want to be a merchant. Ivan Shishkin dreamed of becoming an artist. This news did not please the family, because no one took seriously the children’s hobby for drawing. Dad allowed his son to continue painting, but also demanded participation in family affairs. The father gave him instructions, hoping that his son would change his mind. Shishkin Sr. sent Ivan to trade grain in neighboring cities. The aspiring artist and merchant involuntarily returned from travels with many sketches. But financially, these trips were not successful. The young man came at a loss! Everywhere he was hung and deceived, the young man did not have a commercial vein. The family reluctantly accepted this fact. When Ivan was 20 years old, his parents let him study.

Unprofitable genre. Stubbornness
He became an artist against fate. Few people supported him. But the young man was obsessed with art. In 1856, having successfully graduated from the school of sculpture and architecture in Moscow, he entered the main forge of creators – the Imperial Academy of Arts. Ivan Shishkin most of all loved working with landscapes. But this genre was considered unprofitable. Teachers suggested that he try his hand at portraits or historical plots. But Ivan Shishkin was stubborn. And again, I did not think about the benefits.

He strove to portray nature in all its splendor, and he already had his own style and style. But the main difference between Shishkin, a landscape painter, is what nature he writes. Before him, artists willingly depicted the spectacular and whimsical nature of Italy, but it was Ivan Shishkin who decides to show the face of the Russian forest, the expanse of plains and the expanse of mighty rivers.

Student friends recalled that Ivan kept aloof from noisy companies, awkwardly, like a bear, treating the opposite sex. For weeks he ate bread and molasses and walked in his father’s old boots. But in the open air for the day he worked out a lot of sketches. Others could not write such a quantity in a week. In his student days he had many envious people. At the end of his studies, Shishkin received a gold medal, and the family changed his mind about his passion for painting.

Success
Shishkin’s career developed rapidly: etchings in France, a personal exhibition in Germany, the title of academician of arts, the order and universal recognition. At 34, Ivan Shishkin already had his first student – Fedor Vasilyev. Shishkin will teach the young painter everything that he knows. And he will give him all the subtleties and finds.

Shishkin’s painting was contrary to officially accepted art. But the paintings of the Wanderers were of great interest to the public. Fedor Tretyakov was also interested. The collector acquired the artist’s work for his new gallery. At Shishkin, each tree is unique. Of course, this was not hidden from the view of Tretyakov.

Losses
Shishkin liked to ride sketches when the sun was at its zenith, and his friends called him “a noon painter” for that. He married the sister of his student – Evgenia Vasilyeva. Family happiness filled his life like the sun in the picture “Noon. In the vicinity of Moscow. ” But in serene joy Shishkin did not have to live long. In five and a half years, a series of bitter losses will ensue. Fate will begin testing the great Russian artist for strength.

Ivan Shishkin will lose his father first, then the brilliant student Fedor Vasiliev and his beloved wife Evgeny will die from tuberculosis, and two sons will leave after them. The head of the family will be left alone with her daughter Lidochka in her arms. He is only 40 years old. The second marriage with a student of the Academy of Arts Olga Lagoda will also turn into misfortune. She will give birth to his daughter Xenia, and in a year and a half she will die. The widower will plunge into work.
